"From 1805 to 1815 one of history's greatest generals dominated Europe; his name was Napoleon Bonaparte. The wars which bear his name have captivated the world ever since, and there is a large range of literature available; the following is our selection. Due to the interest one profound event in Napoleon's life, we have a completely separate selection of literature dedicated just to the Battle of Waterloo…." Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Salutations, They have omitted "Swords around a Throne: Napoleon's Grande Armee" by John R. Elting. That is a mistake. _Anyone_ interested in armies and warfare before the Industrial Age should read it, whether you give a &@!#$%(&^& about Napoleon or not. |

Some of those listed are not the best. Numbers 3, 12, 15, 16, and 19 are poor and usually inaccurate.
And the absence of Swords, along with others in French (some of which have been translated into English) is noteworthy, and not in a good way.

In fairness, number 19 is a work of fiction which uses incidents in the Napoleonic wars as nothing more than reference points in a story / philosophical exposition. Rather like Hollywood, it takes what it wants and uses it for its own purposes. Hopefully readers can understand that books are located in the fiction or non-fiction aisles for a reason. |

Swords isn't an essential read at all instead read Morvan Le soldat imperiale For books in French start : Beraud, Stéphane : La Révolution Militaire Napoléonienne tome 1er : Les Manoeuvres tome 2nd : Les Batailles You won't find anything better in any language – not even in Klingon. |

To actually begin to understand the Grande Armee at all, Swords is most definitely a must and the bibliography is excellent which can lead to more research by the individual readers if they are so inclined. Morvan's two volumes are also excellent and it is one of the references listed in Swords. |
