Hi all.
I recently posted a review of three sets (TOS and TNG bridge crew, and Romulan strike team) of the Modiphius Trek miniatures over at Dead Dick's Tavern. I thought it might be of interest to the community, so I'm posting a link here.

Summary: Mixed review, but more positive than negative. The bad is bad, though…

Comments welcome!

Having waited over 30 years to get these figures (ever since FASA Trek) I'm pleased to have them.

Got to say though, my Gorilla Glue had no problem sticking these resin figures together.

Some of the poses are very questionable (Yar, Scotty) and equipment choices odd (Worf), but i'm pleased to have them. Still can't understand why some of the TNG crew have Generations/DS9 uniforms. Restricts some of their use to upto that film.

I think it might have been a problem with my bottle of Gorilla Glue, Norrins.

I think it would be nice to have different versions of these characters. Sure, give Worf a bat'leth; but not if it's the only version of him you make…

I hope they make individual miniatures later…guess we'll have to see.

Here's a glimpse at what's coming from Heroclix this year.

Nice! Is that a Dr. Pulaski I see? Not a big fan, but it would be cool to have her miniature anyway.

And that is a much better Worf for sure!

Norrins22 Feb 2019 7:02 a.m. PST

Not sure if that is Pulaski. Putting my nerd hat on, if it is, she's wearing the wrong uniform. Pulaski was never seen on screen with the 3rd season high collar uniform.

Wonder if it is supposed to be a 'generic' crewmember?

Nice figs and then I saw the price tag and said NOPE.

Best I can find is 40 bucks on Amazon. You did amazingly well, have you painted the Original figures yet?

The Angry Piper23 Feb 2019 4:35 p.m. PST

Working on them as we speak, GGouveia. I think I got lucky because I bought them around Christmas, and the same merchant is now selling the sets for $40 USD plus. I still can't explain my luck with the TOS set; it wasn't from the same merchant and it was a fluke, to say the least.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one who has noticed some rather odd….design choices with the miniatures. I have the Romulans and TNG generic away team sets, and I have noticed some odd choices as well. On the one hand, having a male and female of each species in the away team set is great, but on the other, I can't help but feel like Andorians, Tellarites and Denobulans might be better choices for a TOS or ENT away team set. I get that ANdorians and Tellarites are founding members, but they aren't exactly prominent TNG-onwards, and Denobulans don't even get mentioned outside of ENT, as far as I'm aware. Bolians/Bajorans/Benzites…etc seem like they would be better choices for a TOS away team. Two of the miniatures have miscast, disfigured faces which is another issue altogether.

And the Romulan set is just plain disappointing-worst sculpt variety out of any of the sets (only six sculpts) and most repetition of individual sculpts in a set among all of the sets (three of the female Uhlan in the box). All of the sculpts have the same neutral expression-no shouting faces, no sneering or smirking faces. It also has a similar problem to the TNG bridge crew box in that it really doesn't work for one period of trek history-there are three different uniforms present in the box, and one of them-worn by half of the minis in the box-isn't even a canon uniform! There's actually only one Romulan wearing a TNG uniform, with four others wearing DS9 uniforms, while the remainder sport the non-canon variant.

I think I'll still pick up the Klingon box if//when I can find it for a reasonable price, but so far I'm not super impressed. There's some good stuff here, but some of the content choices seem really questionable, and the price modiphius is asking for product of this quality makes it a tough buy.

Having seen this on Voyager the other day, I'm wondering if the Romulans are supposed to be wearing these uniforms?

Catoblepas08 Mar 2019 5:57 a.m. PST

Norrins Four of them are wearing those DS9 uniforms, one of them is wearing a TNG Uniform, and the other five are wearing non-canon uniforms from the video game Star Trek Online.

Norrins08 Mar 2019 7:36 a.m. PST

Gotcha.

Utter madness in that decision!

The Angry Piper10 Mar 2019 5:15 a.m. PST

Catoblepas: I didn't hate the Romulan set as much as you, but I can see your point about the lackluster sculpts. At least they were mostly one-piece, which cuts the fiddlyness down. Duplicate sculpts are a bummer, but at least you get 10 instead of 8. Still ridiculous pricing, though…

I really dislike the TNG set. It's a mess. I wasn't about to paint the uniforms as sculpted as that would give the crew a decidedly non-uniform (ducking)look. I just freehand-painted the early-mid TV series uniforms on everyone where possible.

Catoblepas15 Mar 2019 5:41 p.m. PST

IIRC, The Klingon and Romulan sets both had 8 miniatures originally, until they added two more to the sets before release after complaints. so it was actually worse at one point.

The generic starfleet away team all have one uniform style, there are no repeat sculpts, and each species present is represented with both a male and a female sculpt, so it's certainly a step in the right direction. Hopefully they have learned their lessons from the TNG bridge crew and Romulan sets.

Unfortunately, the Star Trek stuff seems to have fallen by the wayside in favor of the Fallout stuff, I don't see the rough edges of this line getting much fleshing out at this stage. Wave 2 was much smaller than Wave 1, and talk of wave 3 seems to have quietly petered out. Fingers crossed though.

Norrins18 Mar 2019 6:39 a.m. PST

Wave 3 will apparently contain a Villains pack (Khan, Borg Queen etc), an Original Series landing party box set and a box set based on characters from a pod cast that supports the rpg.
