I was reading an interview with SAGA when they released version 2 of the game and they mentioned an Ancients version of the game, think Troy etc.Its not released yet or even confirmed I suppose, but I just wondered are there any other Skirmish games for the Ancient period you guys would recommend? I'm thinking Troy or Sparta, epic battle with a few heroes etc? |

Oops! Missed the part about "skirmish", thought you were interested in mass battle rules. Cheers! |

You could always use Lion Rampant or probably even better Dragon Rampant, to play ancient skirmish type games. |

Take a look at the new skirmish game Mortal Gods link (Note this is NOT the fantasy game Of Gods and Mortals) Skirmish/warbands in ancient Greece – Spartan and Athenean Hoplites etc. |

How in the heck do pike-armed figures skirmish? It seems to me that the defender would just deflect the pike's thrust to the side and charge him. Game over – one dead pikeman. |

@Coopman – I wouldn't disagree but you have your facts a little muddled. Pelopelesian hoplite warfare preceded pikes by approx. between 50-100 years. Hoplites used spears 6-8ft long. This was the period of the City State wars, the conflict with Sparta and the first war with Persia. The pike was first introduced in Greece by Philip II of Macedon (Alexander the Greats father) around 350BC. The Sarisa was 13-20ft long. He probably learnt of the use of pike from Epaminondus during his time in Thebes. The Mortal Gods rules cover the period around 450-400BC approx. so no pike-on-pike combat. |

Advanced Song of Blades and Heros is what our group uses for ancient (and fantasy as Troy may be) games. Ganesha makes some other games that might work also. link We use HOTT for what you write as "epic battle with a few heroes" Hector comes for Achilles

thanks for the replies. I think Song of Blades and Heros looks about what I'm after. Was there ever an Ancients version (I guess I mean Bronze age + Greeks,Spartan,Persians etc) ? I've seen references to Song of Spear and Shield, but cant find any actual rules? The Mortal Gods game looks interesting, but I have a cunning plan for all the figures i need so dont need to buy a whole gaming set just after some rules. Can anyone comment on how lion rampant vs SBH would compare for greek era games? |

There is song of Arthur and merlin what I think is the only historical songs rule book. It does fantasy Arthurian and historical too. But the standard Songs rules would really work for historical also. Lion Rampant and Songs are real different size of battles. Songs is best with about 10 minis and Rampant needs about 60. Although song of Arthur and marlin is by same guy as Lion Rampant. Hope it helps you. |

We have been working on a set of Ancient skimish rules for small actions, 30-60 models in raiding missions foraging and such. The rules are pretty much done and internal playtesting is finished. We are about o move into blind playtesting soon. You can see a couple of AAR here: link link Feel free to reach out to us through the blog if you'd be interested in blind playtesting. The plan es tu publish before end of year if we finish the blind playtesting and adjustments that we need to finish. cheers Francisco |

Another Ancients skirmish game is DE BELLIS VELITUM link Based on DBA principles but quite different as elements are single figures. |

You can use Warhammer Ancient Battles (WAB) and/or War and Conquest (WAC). |

@bobnar – That looks worth a go, and at the right price point ( free) Thanks. @wmyers – On Principle I refuse to use anything with warhammer in the title. Its just a personal prejudice, I wont try and justify it. |

In a recent Oddcast, Richard Clarke of Too Fat Lardies said that there might be an ancients version of Sharp Practice in the offing -- I am looking forward to those rules. |
