Neat idea and kit to show the interior. Hadn't realised that the commander and gunner were on the left hand side of the turret with the loader on the right. That means that the loader has to load with his left hand. As most loaders are right handed that would affect reload rates. |

In the 70's Bandai made 1/48 WWII tanks all with detailed interior. I have all they made. Still these new ones are much more detailed. |

BattlerBritain… The loader being on the RHS of the turret would not have made any difference in the rate of fire. The loader's position in the Pz III and IV, and also the Tiger and Stugs, was also on the left. I don't recall the German army ever having problems with loading their tank guns. It doesn't matter whether you are left or right handed – you get used to the conditions and just get on with the job as taught and it soon becomes second nature. Example – Right handed drivers in the UK do not suffer or drive slower from having to operate the gear stick or hand brake with their left hand. Loading a tank gun is no different once you have mastered the basics. In my own experience (27 years in the British Army), right handed soldiers do not have problems loading or carrying out stoppage drills on a GPMG or similar weapon which is loaded using the left hand. Nor do left handed loaders have problems loading a Chieftain or Challenger gun from the LHS of the turret. Incidentally I qualified as a gunner/loader on the Challenger tank almost 20 year ago. Most of the drills for operating the 7.62 chain gun co-ax require the use of the left hand due to the position of the gun within the turret. You learn the drills as taught and practice them regardless of whether or not you are right or left handed. Max |
