Not medieval but I like Charles Edward Stuart also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. The only monarch named after three sheepdogs.

Alexander Nevsky, Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and Grand Prince of Vladmir was hard to beat (literally). Plus, he has a really awesome movie about him.

While I respect the military skill of the Black Prince, the truth is it's hard to respect the motives of the war he fought, which amounted to both sides traipsing around France, plundering the populace and slaughtering across the countryside because each wanted to be the Big Boss who got all the tax money and the best seat at dinner.

Nevsky, at least, was defending his nation and his people from invaders.

Would have been Lord Farquaad but I don't think he was actually a Royal. Thanks to Shrek & Fiona :(

Depends how you define 'prince'.

In Europe, a prince was the ruler of a principality. In the same way that a Count ruled a County, a Duke ruled a Dukedom, or a King ruled a Kingdom.

The English, of course, did it differently. The title of prince was reserved for the sons of the King. There were no principalities for them to rule.

Later we get another usage of the word. By the time of Machiavelli 'prince' could be used to refer to any ruler of an independent state. Which would include kings of course…

The Black Prince.

Well known for his one-hit wonder Black Rain, that also was a movie.

Cerdic, the bishops of Durham, in the UK, were the Prince-Bishops (Earls Palatine), and still are, I believe. This was because of their position of defenders of the Scottish border,

Prince John -- Robin Hood would be a nobody without a good villain!

Ron

P.S. I know, he was later crowned King…

P.P.S. I am also at least somewhat cognizant of the etymology of the word "villain". Don't bug me!
