….from grenades to down enemy drones "It's likely that whoever US troops fight in the next war, these enemies will be armed with drones. That's why Army researchers have invented a smart and cost-effective way to bring them down. The US Army has invented a new grenade in the 40 mm configuration that is packed with a net and specifically designed to take out enemy drones…." Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Hmmmm, seems like ordinary bird shot fired from a shotgun would be A LOT less expensive. Kinetic force for the win! |

It is easy to protect a drone against bird shot and buck shot of various sizes just dosen't have the pattern density. It would be nearly impossible to make a drone impervious to a sticky net, indeed an off center hit would be the most effective. All they have to worry about is cost padding if the munitions are not made 'in house'. |

I've seen video of trials done by police forces for various drone counter measures. Small drones are surprisingly hard to take down. Nets are very effective but of course they are short range once they net is deployed. Sorry to say but firearms of various sorts just weren't that effective. So not really a win that people expected. |

Do we need Hunter-Killer drones of our own? |

They've got HK drones. Designed to target and chase down a drone, then it fires a net from the air. I'll see if I can track down the video. |

Ok, it wasn't that hard: YouTube link Next up will be net-resistant drones and let the arms race begin! |

I've been bugged! Told ya they were out to get me. Those are not my posts above, my posts have disappeared. Oh, wait, now my posts are back. Weird. |

It's expensive, but the US has lots of tungsten (and depleted uranium, if you really want to go nuts). There is a range of tungsten shotshells currently in production: link 50+ yard range, and the pellets are 56% heavier than lead the same size. Plus the hardness of tungsten. I still say that a 1500W microwave oven magnetron is more effective at smoking drones, though. |

In the future Drone Wars, experience in skeet shooting will be a positive skill set… ;-) |

Mind you there may be advantages to bringing down a drone in enough of one piece to able to investigate what's cached in it memory… |

@RUO… Fair Point. That's the benefit of the Israeli Drone Dome system (if you don't use the laser to fry the drones). I think there is a close cousin of Drone Dome that broadcasts a very loud "land right where you are" signal instead of simply jamming, so you can physically get the drone and then pull the launch site data out of the onboard GPS (since most drones have a 'return to launch site if you lose coms' function, especially the bigger ones) |
