I think the only danger from the sky they face is from a friendly fire incident.

Great looking diorama ! But yes, AFAIK the North's Airforce never made any ground attacks. At least I never heard or read about any. They were too busy flying CAP not CAS, AFAIK.

And besides Friendly Fire, like any tropical environment I'm sure there were a lot birds as well as monkeys that would drop or fling "body fluids" on or near you … frown

I think their only air strike attempts were against the Navy.

Well, the LT has obviously just called in an airstrike and everyone (including the LT) is wondering if this strike will go better than the last.

Maybe they are watching the Huey getting shot up.

That sounds right Wolf.

Or FA and mortars … evil grin Being a former Army Infantry LT, '79-'83 I was trained to call in fire support for mortars all the way up to Naval gunfire and all sorts of aircraft. Not only did you have to be able read a map properly. But so did the supporting fires … evil grin If either one was wrong … Bleeped text could happen … frown

watching the Huey getting shot up.
Sadly that happened often from what I was told, read, etc. IIRC @ 3000 + helicopters were shot down in SE Asia. When I was assigned to the 101 in '80. The Div had over 450 helicopters. We trained to avoid having our copters shot down. Using a variety of tactics, procedures and methods i.e. SEADS, flying NOE or contour, etc. And most importantly you do not an assault landing into a Hot LZ. But as in Vietnam there were no guarantees … frown

The North made air to ground attacks. See LIMA 85. Nothing much had changed since World War One except the Air America Huey bringing down an AN-2 Colt biplane.

I figured they may have but have never comes across any information on that. I did read about the Huey shooting down an AN-2. IIRC by a CIA guy firing an AK-47 from the Huey at the AN-2.
