Or was the will forged? (Inspired by a brief mention in Slingshot 322.) |

It does not matter. Octavian became emperor. That is all that matters. |

If not, who? Antony? Brutus? |

Octavian was Julius Caesar's only legal heir. In reality he inherited the loyalty of a Roman political faction. He also inherited the financial resources of Caesar. Both made him a major player in the power plays that took place in the years to come. |

Caesar probably did not survive long enough to designate who his successor should be It would be OK to name an heir and his will naming Octavian would have been normal in day to day politics Adopting heirs was quite common. Caesar was probably hoping to have his son Caesarion , via Cleopatra as his successor in power to unite Rome and the East . Once Caesar had a son he had several options. This was one of the reasons cited by his assassins and the need to act quickly There is also a wild theory mentioned by Plutarch in his Life of Brutus that Cesar was Bruus's father even though Brutus was only 15 years younger. |

The fun thing about history is that we get to argue this stuff forever. Or until someone invents a time machine, or at least a time viewer. That would be cool. |

Anyone who watched Rome on HBO knows who Caesarion's Daddy really was, and it wasn't Caesar. ("Pullo! The Queen needs you!") |
