Looking for some cheap larger MDF bases that I can use as bases for trees.

Too lazy to make bases out of matte board and don't have the tools to cut my own MDF.

If someone knows of an online retailer that has already cut holes in the bases that'd be a bonus

Thanks

Ask Pendraken if their warbases line can accomodate. They do custom bases all the time. Very reasonably priced, even with the shipping from UK to US.

Alternatively, use CDs as bases. The ones you get free on fronts of magazines, hole covered over with some duct tape, sprayed black and then painted, got loads of them for all sorts of scenery.

CD's won't work. I need the ability to take trees off and on without any hassle.

I base my trees on 2"-squares of MDF. I add, remove, and move, as needed, by grabbing the based tree, as a whole. Would something like that work? If so, I can give you contact information for a company who will produce such 2"-squares of MDF for you, for a reasonable price. Cheers!

Thanks Sgt Slag

I thought about that. Just basing my tress on a piece of painted/textured MDF, but I like the idea of being able to place them into the circular slotted spots on the base so they won't topple.

I would ask Warbases for round (say 30mm) bases with a magnet hole, some magnets, and a larger irregular base (say 150 x 60 mm) with scattered magnet holes.

Mount your trees on the round bases with magnets installed and texture to your requirement.

Mount more magnets on the larger base (get the polarity the same as the trees) and texture the base leaving flat spaces around the magnets.

Deploy on your table and lift trees as required and replace when finished.

captaincold69, how about mounting 2-4 trees, together, on a larger MDF base? This would prevent them from toppling. You can choose whatever density/spacing you like. I mount mine individually, as the toppling as gamers reach across the table, is not a bother for me, personally. MDF is a great basing material, inexpensive, and easy to decorate to make it look attractive on the tabletop.

My concern is that the more complex the basing system, the more expensive. I'm a big fan of KISS: Keep It Super Simple. ;-) Your mileage may vary. Whatever approach you choose, I wish you the best of luck. Cheers!

Thanks Sgt Slag

I'm looking at Noble Knights (they sell some 4Ground bases) and I've reached out to Warbases.

The cost isn't a huge issue for me and I really dislike making terrain so if there is an option that gets me results quicker with a smaller cost, I'm all for it!

Understood! Good luck. Cheers!

Warbases is also my suggestion…great service to boot!

I mount my trees on washers. That adds heft so they never topple. Then I make the forest area with scatter, lichen, twigs etc. Move the trees out of the way as needed.

Big Washers and strong magnets can solve almost all and
any tree mounting problems.

After contacting Warbases and thinking over this, I'm not sure I want larger mdf bases.

What I'm trying to accomplish (other than some solo home games) is LESS stuff for storage. With the MDF bases, while pretty, it will increase my need for more space.

I'm going to look at the large washers w/magnets as a potential solution.

Anyone with a bigger brain care to spell it out to me how you go about placing the magnets to make this all work?

Ideally, I'd want to be able to remove the washer bases and lay down the trees in my terrain box.

I'll trying my google-fu and see what I can find.

Thanks

Get a box big enough to stand the trees upright in, it will take the same volume as trees lying down.

I use oddly shaped pieces of cloth, to mark out the limits of my forests, with a few trees sitting atop the "forest" area, to sell it as a forest region. Requires fewer trees, and less storage space. Hence why I use 2"-square bases on my individual trees.

Using enough trees to make a legitimate "forest", would prove impractical, for gaming. Having trees mounted such that they can't be moved out of the way for my figures, would also prove impractical, for me and my approach to gaming. Gaming is a trade-off between what is pretty, and what is playable. Cheers!

I think you (and others) are spot on. I'm wanting less fuss and this sounds like the best option.
