Hello TMP Members, So, I have been building a 28m Ptolemaic army and recently purchased some Victrix Greek light cavalry. I am wondering what type of cavalry I could make for my Ptolemaic army from this set? Best regards |

There were a large number of Greek mercenary units in that army, so it could easily serve as any of the attached light cavalry. One source for Raphia lists a large contingent of mercenary Greek cavalry led by Echecrates, so my guess is that they would fit perfectly. |

I think most of Echecrates would have been heavies, eg Thessalians. But there are all sorts of options- especially shielded Tarantines. There's a useful book called Le Soldat Lagide, by Stephane Thion has lots of uniform reconstructions. |

I agree that Tarentines are the best bet for the later times, but also the wars were long and certainly actual Greek Light cavalry must have served in Ptolemaic armies- and probably earlier than Raphia since we have few details of orders of battles for the Wars of Ptolemy II. The swift maneuvers of Echecrates reveal that the mercenary cavalry were swift, but their intervention in routing the enemy left wing infantry make it seem that they were indeed xystophoroi rather than all javelineers. We don't know the breakdown or equipment. Here are some of my early Tarentines by various brands to help. link link The Victrix with shields are perfect. link Later Ptolemaic Tarentines are shown with square shields: link |

Thanks for all the wonderful responses. I'll start building them as Tarentines. :) |

Wonder to know if anyone had faced these brave Greeks with the Persian Light Infantry….
