Do you use forces that enter the game after the first turn from the air? Airborne, Falschirmjaegeren, drop pods …

It's rare, but no unheard of in the games I play.

Pictors Studio06 Feb 2019 6:33 a.m. PST

I do all quite often. Space marines arrive via jump pack or drop pod, teleporting in from orbit etc.

In infinity we have guys that can drop in.

Macedonian Hypaspists during the Indian campaign.

There are plenty of examples.

While I have done it during a game as you suggest, I prefer to resolve a parachute drops pre-game.

Rarely and mostly for sci-fi drop troops

For paratroops we use Buck's approach and have the drops done before the game

Rich Bliss06 Feb 2019 7:17 a.m. PST

Absolutely. I just recently ran a "Night Drop – Normandy" game where paras landed on turns 1-3.

Good references in the thread titles. What is next?

I've done the 'drop in' for skirmish-level games,
a dozen or fewer paratroops. Long time ago, though.

For 'big' airborne insertions, prefer the 'pre-game'
method, ala Buck.

For Paratroop Drop I used to cut paper the size of each base of figures numbering each piece of paper with a corresponding number on the bottom of each base of figures. Then I would put them in a shallow box and holding the box over the game table and pull each piece of paper from it and let it drop onto the table. Wherever it landed, I would replace it with the base of figures.
Funny where they can land sometimes. I had some British Paratroopers land on top of some German troops hiding in the woods. The British were killed before they hit the ground.

Best system I ever saw was for a Crete game. Player picks the flight path of the transport. Then you roll dice for distance between troopers. So after you drop trooper #1, roll for how far along the path trooper #2 lands. Gets units in long lines rather than in random clusters all over the map.

I did on occasion, using Drop Pods and Dropships in my Sci-fi forces.

Primarily SMs, including CSMs, but I have Landa's for my Orks. Plus Rokkit Boyz with Rokkit Paks.

Eldar Swooping Hawks drop in like paras.

As well as some my IG have Jump Packs and even IG Elysians can drop in like Paras and/or use Jump Packs. Plus I have some Landers for my IG too.

Admittedly I'm a little biased having been with the 101 Air Assault Div., in my long passed youth.old fart And having been awarded both Parachute and Air Assault Wings … evil grin

I do have reinforcements drop in, but that's not quite dropping out.

In Traveller space combat games, ships can leave combat by running away into jump space. That could be called dropping out, I suppose.

I played in a great Leonardo game with Landsknecht Fallschirmjaegers.
It was a lot of fun watching the panic on the "other side" when a grand total of 5 figures survived the landing, each one about 12" separated.

No, not any Zulu paras. LOL

Vigilant06 Feb 2019 1:41 p.m. PST

Helicopters in Vietnam. Para drops decided pre-game.

evilgong06 Feb 2019 2:58 p.m. PST

Yes, my fantasy rules have Aircraft (cf Sky-Pirates etc) that can land marines.

But the position they land is next to the on-table Aircraft.

Driving in from the enemy's rear in BMDs. A great way to secure a crossing.
Being cursed by the enemy is a sign of honor.

COL Scott ret07 Feb 2019 12:12 a.m. PST

I don't currently play games with air insertion.

Andy ONeill07 Feb 2019 11:13 a.m. PST

Long time since i did an air drop.
Used to use the paper tokens approach lined up on a 1m ruler which was then turned over.

UshCha08 Feb 2019 4:49 a.m. PST

We let the player drop 1 piece as practice then let him drop pieces of paper from about 600mm above the base of the table. Alternately he can take a bit longer and drive/walk on table from the edge of his choosing but the enemy may get a bit of warning.

Russ Lockwood08 Feb 2019 1:59 p.m. PST

Did a sci-fi planet assault via assault ships. Not exactly a great idea as players stuck together around the ship and left 90% of the table empty.

I did get a spring-working catapults from somewhere (I want to say BattleMasters, but maybe not). When a player ran over a particular objective chit, he got six puffballs. Load puffball, bring down the catapult arm with one hand while holding the base steady with the other, and let fly. Wherever the puffball ends up -- and the thing is so light, it will bounce off things -- that's where the template went. Anything under the template gets attacked.

Best method yet for unintentional friendly fire! Can't blame dice, just someone's fingers.
