I think that's supposed to be a cloth or plastic covering. Not sure which it is.
Tends to look less regular on the real thing.
Think it's supposed to reduce glare, break up the shape a little and reduce ir signature. ( multi spectral ).

Standard on modern british vehicles afaik. I was driving behind a land rover defender with it the other day.
