Perfect. Muted colours and the subdued lighting that almost suggests "The Duellists". Love the Calvary in Russian style. Homemade I suspect?

Thanks very much everyoneone. deadhead I cant claim any homemade or converetd stuff here, the Cossacks are all as they come, mainly from Perry Miniatures and are designed in winter gear for 1812.

Just need to get my butt in gear and get soem French and Allies done now.

ACWBill07 Feb 2019 4:26 a.m. PST

Your Cossacks are top notch Roger. Well done.

I meant the calvary not cavalry……the wayside cross which is so nicely done.

The whole thing is great. Be sure to do the French in just the same style, if not even scruffier!

Aaaaah! I feel silly now. To be honest that was a gift from one of the other gamers, its resin and I pretty much just painted it. I can find out where he got it from if you like?

The French will be just as muted but much scruffier for the most part. I have 24 Poles painted and a gun and crew, I love how sruffy they look.

I made one and showed it here, for some French lancers. It is a great roadside scene for many an era and many a country.

The diagonal bar beneath the cross bar (never understood the significance of that extra) is very Slavonic…..

So many have shown these figures in primary colours, with maybe a dry brushing of frost in white. Nonsense. When my two lads came back from just three days at the Leeds musical festival, after three days of torrential rain and sitting around a fire that was just burning plastic waste, they were black, their kit was only fit to be dumped and our garage stank of smoke for days. That was three days.

Look at modern homeless folk in shop doorways, then multiply that look several times…..remember Kubrick, in The Duellists, and he was being generous.

My Boots froze and cracked in Red Square in minus 23F. They were US Marine Altama boots. I still have them, but they both cracked right across the instep in minutes. It was only minus 23F and we were tourists who dashed into GUM to warm up. I cannot understand how one of them got home. I have been to Russia three times now, in Jan or Feb and it does get quite chilly.

Yeah, I know. That seems daft to those in Illinois or Michigan this winter, but us folk in England think -10F is bad news.

When I get chance I will stick a picture or two on of the Polish unit and the gun (plus Ney) see what you think. probably not going to be quite as scruffy as Kubrick but a bit more scruffy than the Russians.

There are several different ones used in different regions of Russia. Including several that are originally of Greek orthodox origin. The "budded cross" (with flared ends) is from Greek origins and often seen. link

Some even seem to have some Islamic influence- note the crescent shaped footrest in this picture. link

The things you learn. The first two links answered many a question and certainly show just how "right" is RogerC's cross for Russia. Thanks for all that work!

archiduque08 Feb 2019 9:27 a.m. PST

Well done!!!
