A friend of mine did this years ago, but in 15mm. I'd like to do it in 28mm…the Imperial army of Ferdinand Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico vs the Mexican Republican army. Can we say obscure wars? Does anyone know of a company that actually makes figs for this period, or would it just be easier to find comparable period figs and convert?

thanks for your thoughts!

Look at gringo40s.com/. They have them in 40mm and 28mm.

Cheers,
Peter

Foundry has a great range. If you want to go a bit cheaper you could go withe the classic true 25mm range at The Virtual Armchair General.

The TVAG line has been "pending" for years on his site. The Foundry range is nice. The Gringo range looks very nice as well, but I have not seen them in person. I am not sure how the ranges look side by side. Old Glory may make some Mexican peasants in their Old West range, but you'd have to go take a look.

If you go to the Foundry site, be aware that there are actually two ranges that offer figures for this conflict. You will find most in their Maximillian Adventure range: link

However, you will also find a number of outstanding miniatures for this conflict in their Old West Range as well, including Mexicans that you can use for Republican Soldiers: link

and French Foreign Legion soldiers serving in Mexico: link

Also, some of the Mexican soldiers from the Old West range come with extra shako hats that you can use to convert American Civil War Artillery crews into Republican Mexican crews (which are hard to find otherwise).

The Foundry Maximillian Adventure figures are noticeably smaller than the figures in the other two Foundry ranges.

The Gringo 40s 28mm figures are very nice but, they are VERY large and not compatible in size with the Foundry ranges.

A well-timed thread if ever I saw one!

The widely expanded range of "True 25mm" figures, "Viva Juarez!" becomes available as of TODAY from TVAG.

Just today I received the extra castings needed to complete a basic inventory for the entire range. A good number of items have yet to be photographed as unpainted castings for illustration on their page ( link ), but everything listed is ready for sale NOW.

The range is complete with Austrian Horse, Foot, and Guns, with Belgian Foot and Horse, and Egyptian Foot, besides the requisite French and Mexican Horse, Foot, and Guns. Hussars, Zouaves, FFL, and Contra-Guerillas are also available.

The Republican Mexicans are provided in early war Regular Uniforms, and in late war variants with some US gear, as well as Irregular Juaristas. Imperial Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery complete the range.

Infantry is sold in bags of 20 with command figures and appropriate flag, and cavalry come with 12 horses and riders. Artillery is sold as complete sets of a gun, limber, draft animals, and crew. There are even ox-carts (large and small) for the all-important "tail" of each army.

The pewter castings are bargain-priced, too at $30.00 USD per bag of Horse or Foot, and $12.00 USD per complete gun.

Formal news of the range's return will hit the Hobby News Page ASAP.

There's still some construction to finish on site, but it's all for sale!

VIVA! TVAG!

I have the Foundry figs plus some of the figs from TVAG from their previous iteration – while they are a bit smaller than some of the Foundry figs they are very nice and paint up easily; as well, TVAG have a full range of figs in convenient unit packs

Some of the Foundry figs are amazingly good such as the contra-guerillas

link

I have also converted some of the Perry ACW plastic infantry for use as Mexican troops – mostly in white "fatigue" uniform although later in the war the Mexican Army of the North was almost entirely clad in surplus Union uniforms and armed with Springfield rifle-muskets

Perhaps it is my eyes but these TVAG French Foreign Legion photos appear identical, VJF-02 thru VJF-05

Irregular Miniatures in the UK has a Maximilian line of figures in 28mm, including hard to find Mexican artillery ad crew.

Yea, the pictures don't match the descriptions.

Mexican irregular infantry and cavalry from Mexican-American War ranges, and peones from Old West ranges, can also be used.
