Re-visited the Safari Ltd. toy site, to see what new Dragons, if any, they offer… Found this Freedom Dragon toy, which appears to have been inspired by the Copper Dragon drawing, in the 1977 1e AD&D Monster Manual: link Paint this toy with a quality metallic copper, and you would have a model which is nearly identical to the old Monster Manual's artwork for the Copper Dragon… Not terribly expensive, easy to re-paint, far less money than a proper RPG miniature! Cheers! |

Yeah, that's definitely a near copy. The "fan" wings are a dead giveaway to the source of the design. |

The excellent few months old massive book Dungeons & Dragons: Art and Arcana, A Visual History tackles the subject remotedly. Gary and co modified all kinds of toys to make miniatures for the monsters and I got the impression that many such monster was used as the basis for the original Monster Manual's illustrations. I heartily recommend the book! A thick informative and very visual histroy of D&D |

Cool! Except that that one is painted like Herbie the Wonder Bug. |

I went back and looked at the drawings in the MM for Copper, Brass, and Bronze Dragons… They all have almost identical wings… This one model could be tweaked to look slightly different, and painted differently, of course, to represent all three types of metallic dragons. Cheers! |
