Howdy,

I ran a Dark Age Skirmish scenario at the NOVAG game day in Centerville, Virginia yesterday (January 27th). The scenario was a reprise of my game from FALL-IN '18. The Normans were building a motte & bailey, but they failed to gain approval of the local planning commission. Militant Saxons raid the construction site, and a battle ensues. Good fun! 15mm figures painted by Evil Bob (Mr. Bob Chicka). My in-progress rules So Convenient for Hewing were used.

Photo 1 – Nine games were a part of the NOVAG event. This photo looks across the table and room as set-up was completed, before the players arrived.

Photo 2 – Two Saxon forces were on the table. This photo shows one of the forces, 3 troop elements shown: 1 Leader, a 4 figure unit of huscarls (veterans), a 8 figure unit of fyrd, and, a 12 figure unit of lesser fyrd (green troops). The second force (not shown) was similar, but had an 8 figure unit of archers rather than the spearmen of the Fyrd.

Photo 3 – An initial Norman force of 3 troop elements was deployed to defend the bailey. This force consisted of 1 Leader, 2 – 8 figure units of warriors, one of which was armored, and an 8 figure unit of Crossbowmen.

Photo 4 – Game in-progress photo, Norman reinforcements arrive and cross the ford. The reinforcements consisted of 2 troop elements: 1 Leader, 1 8 figure unit of mounted warriors, and 1 unit of 8 spearmen.

Photo 5 – Another in-progress photo, contemporary with Photo 4. The Saxons have pushed onto the construction site and the lesser fryd start tearing things down – not shown in the photo. Burn Bailey Burn! Meanwhile the photo shows Saxon and Norman elements facing off on the construction site.

It was a fun game. I've gotten a first draft of rules written from my outline, and will be working to proof, edit, add examples, and illustrations. After several years of playtesting, progress toward publication is being made. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and then you have to keep on truckin'.

Ponder on,

JAS
