What it tells us that loyalties were more complicated than we like to think. Things were not as black and white, (no pun intended), as modern historians make it out to be. |

Social relationships are very simple when viewed from the outside and very complex when view from within. Russian peasants performed extraordinary feats of arms and endurance is campaigns that, on paper, did nothing but strengthen their oppressors. One of the limitations of history is that we generally do not know the thoughts of the great mass of people at the bottom of the social ladder. |
