A friend of mine had put together a set of rules for classical ancient combat (500 to 50 BC. So I helped him with getting them "out their", you can follow this link to the Wargame Vault" site and have a peek. They are free, and he looks forward to hearing peoples input.

I took a quick look. Right off the bat I notice the writer has got the Roman infantry in the wrong classifications. Roman Hastati were the front line legion units of younger, less established men. The Principes/Triarii were older, more established and more likely to be heavily armoured. Take a look at various producers of Roman figures and you will see what I mean. When someone gets this sort of thing wrong I get very suspicious about the rest of the rules.

 Armored infantry: any figure possessing helmet, shield, greaves and
body armor. Greek hoplites, Successor phalangites and Roman Hastati
(with mail shirts).

Heavy infantry: any figure possessing a shield, helmet and either
greaves or body armor . Alexandrine phalangites, Carthaginian citizen
spearmen, Roman Princeps-Triarii and Persian Immortals .

Under generals I noticed the following.

1. Gifted: e.g. Alexander the Great, Hannibal Barca, Pyrrhus
of Epirus .
2. Excellent: e.g. Scipio Africanus, Hasdrubal Barca,
Lysimachus .
3. Good: e.g. Antigonus one-eye, Seleucus Nicator,
Antiochus III .

To rate Scipio Africanus in category 2, at the same level as Hasdrubal is absurd. Scipio was one of the great commanders of the ancient world. Now, of course, I could always rate him in category 1 but if someone writing rules gets this wrong then what does it say about the rest of the game.
