Looks like it was a great game! Thanks for the AAR! |
rsutton | 26 Jan 2019 12:46 p.m. PST |
It certainly was. Keith's comment on the post says it well… the challenges of planning, and then 'fighting' your plan as a commander are THE huge attraction. Each battle becomes a problem to be solved with specific resources, in a given time and space… I love it. Just not very good at it.. yet!! LOL Kind regards Robin |

Robin, did you use the Spearhead scenario generator? Robert |
rsutton | 26 Jan 2019 3:41 p.m. PST |
Robert Yes we did… the game was an attack/defence. Keith chose a hasty attack. The armies were created according to the scenario generator points system which.. rather cleverly, and regardless of your tactical stance .. never quite gives you what you think you need LOL Kind regards Robin |

Robin, what sort of units do you and Keith have in stock for use with the scenario generator? Do you have whole divisions ready to go or sub-units that you can mix and match as required? Robert |
rsutton | 28 Jan 2019 2:52 p.m. PST |
Robert Our collections are sub units …. we are typically accumulating enough 'kit' for the sorts of TOE options we choose to run. The task of amassing anything bigger is a little too daunting, and actually unnecessary wrt the time we have available for games .. if that makes sense? R |

Thanks, Robin. It makes perfect sense. I thought as much, based on various comments from you and Keith after previous games. I am piecing together WW2 forces for Spearhead, so useful to get your perspectives. Robert |

Robin, looking at the 39-40 TO&E for the British Armoured Division for example, do you go for a single tank regiment or even a tank brigade? What about division assets if you use a brigade or a couple of regiments – do you scale back the artillery support accordingly? Robert |

Robert One of the issues that SH recreates so well is the impact of TOE on the fighting value of a force. For example the Brit armoured division has far too little organic support.. it suffers. I typically take an infantry division list, with an infantry brigade of 3 battalions, an MM company, the 25pdrs (which are ineffective mostly), and some army level 60pdrs for CB. I then support it with an independent tank regiment.. often the Matilda one, but sometimes the Cruiser tank one.. I forget with is called the brigade and which the regiment.. is it cruisers that make up an independent tank regiment? I don';t have the rules with me. I am currently experimenting with the use of the div cav as a possibly effective combined arms group, .. not sure whether to take them as an independent manoeuvre unit, or attach out to an infantry battalion as support. I always take CB, and always some sort of AA (even though keith rarely takes aircraft). kind regards Robin |

Thanks, Robin. What does MM stand for, forgive my ignorance? Robert |

OOps. sorry, good question.. should have been MG .. the vickers companies R |

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks, Robin. Are the 60 pounders typically off-table? Robert |
rsutton | 31 Jan 2019 2:07 p.m. PST |
Robert Always. I have traditionally had all artillery ff table, but am gojng to experiment with some 25pdrs on table (which costs a little more in points terms)… I have not had typically good experiences with British artillery impact/effectiveness in terms of shaping the battle.. so far LOL Robin |

With respect to the independent tank regiment, this would be 3 tank squadrons with 3-4 tank stands plus regimental HQ assets – is that the sort of unit you use? An armoured brigade would be 3 such regiments, which seems larger than I have seen in the games. Robert |
rsutton | 01 Feb 2019 9:57 p.m. PST |
Robert I am typically using a defend list (luck of the die rolls, although tactical stance in 1940 tends to mean the Germans are attacking anyway).. I usually have an infantry regt of 3 battalions, and some combination of a single independent tank brigade (3-5 stands, depending on whether it is Matildas or cruisers, either of which may be in those brigades), and div cav (Mk VIs and Carriers).. numbers vary depending on the stance I take with the force. I also have artillery, and never leave home without counter battery.,, army level 60pdrs If you can access Google, I am happy to share my 1940 lists with you. Nga mihi nui Robin |

This has been very helpful, Robin. It has given me a good sense of what is needed in the first instance. Spearhead was my first introduction to the xSH range and, having recently picked up the Close Combat computer games again, my interest has been reignited. Work still continues on the Great War though ;-) Robert |
