Operation Albion was a German amphibious assault of three islands in the Gulf of Riga in the Fall of 1917. I had never heard of it, but it is a truly fascinating situation with a lot of potential for game scenarios. It was the largest amphibious operation ever carried out by Germany (in either world war) and involved nearly half the High Seas Fleet. The opposing Russian naval forces were badly outmatched, but numerous large shore batteries and extensive minefields served to make things a bit more even. The picture of dreadnoughts, pre-dreadnoughts, cruisers, and swarms of destroyers and torpedo boats cruising around a group of islands and shooting at each other is just very cool. gwpda.org/naval/albion1.htm |

There is a Great War Spearhead scenario covering the main land-based action in Operation Albion. I haven't played it but have seen an AAR on this in the past. Robert |

There's a good book about this that I picked up from On Military Matters store. |
