Are you a cardboard counter/chit player? You know, the kind of compact bookcase games from manufacturers like GMT, Decision Games, Avalon Hill, Compass Games, SPI, MMP, Lock 'n Load, Clash of Arms, etc. Was it an entry point to miniature wargaming? |
sillypoint | 24 Jan 2019 1:34 p.m. PST |
If I can find a reliable opponent. Otherwise I am a collector of those games. |

Not since way back in the previous century. And yes. I played them for at least 10 years before I got into miniatures. |

Far more then I game with miniatures. Squad Leader was my entry point for all things wargame related. |

Just played Avalon hills Merchant of Venus for the first time in 20 years. Great game |

2) Hex & Minis! I'm playing a lot of Ogre again, but have ditched the cardboard for minis on the hex grid.

I would … only I have a harder time finding opponents with similar interests for those than I do for mini games. |

It's definitely the golden age for the war-game side of the board gaming hobby with pretty much every conflict covered from tactical to grand strategic. The components, systems, etc., are light years ahead of most of the games I had in the 70s and 80s. I know several miniatures gamers who used to do both sides and are now giving up on miniatures. |
DisasterWargamer | 24 Jan 2019 2:31 p.m. PST |
Sure – but enjoy miniatures more |

Yes. My first games industry job was at Avalon Hill and some things never leave you. 😀 |
Parzival | 24 Jan 2019 3:13 p.m. PST |
Yep, though more in the SF/F genres than historical. I also favor games with lighter complexity, which is a factor in my playing habits. My problem is in finding that frequent opponent. |

MiniMo is right--especially about Ogre. But there is much to be said generally for hex and miniatures. I did enough hex and cardboard as an adolescent, and I came to miniatures through board gaming opponents, but I don't think of it as a "gateway" so much as something I did until I found miniatures. |
USAFpilot | 24 Jan 2019 5:20 p.m. PST |
I've played Commands & Colors, which is a hex game even if you play it with miniatures. I think hex games (or any type grid) have less grey areas in the rules because movement is more precise. |
gamertom | 24 Jan 2019 5:50 p.m. PST |
Yes, but play miniatures much more often. Still have 100+ board wargames and still buy new ones. And sillypoint is a 100% correct. |

What sillypoint says also applies to miniatures in my case. I do a lot more collecting than playing. One big point in favor of board games is not having to paint miniatures and terrain. Takes time I do not have. |

When you talk about Hex and Counter, I assume games by the likes of Avalon Hill et al. I got a ton or two of them, very rarely play them, but I enjoyed them and still enjoy a select few, but looking back some of the more complex ones were brave attempts to do a very complete simulation, but playability, let alone fun was never on the list. One of my biggest disappointments was War of the Ring, finally playing it after all these years and finding out the game was mostly broken. |

From the sounds of things in the comments above, many gamers are still equating things to the 70s era Avalon Hill and SPI games. You really need to get out and try things like Space Empires, Angola, Sword of Rome, Combat Commander, and more. While I still own a lot of the older games as there were a few gems here and there, today's games in terms of components, playability, and smoother systems have a lot to offer. |

Yup. Just finished playing SPI's Destruction of Army Group Center and am deciding which game to set up next: SPI's The Moscow Campaign, Turning Point: Stalingrad, or Defiant Russia by Avalanche Press. I started playing board wargames around 1972. I've owned and subsequently sold many games, some I regret letting go. This past Christmas my wife, bless her pea pickin' heart, corrected a couple of my mistakes by giving me DAGC and TP: S. I prefer games of low to low-mid complexity that use old-fashioned but tried-and-true methods for hex and counter games. I've found too many games in which the designer created unique but unnecessarily convoluted systems just for the sake of doing something different but not for the advancement of the game (imho). I'm trying to find nice, complete copies of SPI's Kursk: Operation Zitadelle and AH's Fortress Europa to satisfy an itch. |

I have hundreds of counter and map games. But no opponents. So I guess that makes me a collector. I am not sure I have time to do both board and miniature gaming. I think the last one I played was back in the 90s. We actually played a two player game of "World in Flames". Took us weeks to get through it. Before that I think it was SPI's "Battle for Germany" and Victory Games' "The Civil War" back in the 90s. |
