You were asked – TMP link

Which historical figure do you think would disappoint if you met them (barring any language and cultural problems)?

And in the final round:

28% said "John Lennon"
16% said "George B. McClellan"
14% said "Mahatma Gandhi"

Yeah, he seemed like a real "Debbie Downer" I mean have you ever really listened to the lyrics of "Imagine"? Make sure you hide all the guns in the house when that song comes on.

I mean have you ever really listened to the lyrics of "Imagine"?

Yes. The lyrics are brilliant and spot on.

Old Contemptibles23 Jan 2019 9:43 p.m. PST

Imagine is his masterpiece. The lyrics are wonderful. The whole song is brilliant. The world would be a better place if we took his words to heart. Whenever I am down. I just listen to that song and all is right again.

This sounds like dang dangerous politics.

I never liked John Lennon, and I always disliked Imagine.
Even when it cost me in the Romance department. grin

Imagine was a great song. Lennon was a wonderful songwriter, but not for everyone. I like him much more now than I did long ago

+1 VCarter.

Imagine is sophmoric emotional mush.

rustymusket24 Jan 2019 9:29 a.m. PST

Imagine is different things to different people, apparently. Now lets get back to miniatures. Remember, in the end we are all dead. Let us try to enjoy the journey. IMHO.

I like Lennon's work, think I'd have liked Lennon.

My late sister-in-law was friends with Yoko Ono and she claimed she helped Yoko pick out an interim mistress (May Po) for John, whom she described as being a dreamer and a bit impulsive as a child at times.

Liked his music; didn't care for he politics; it's as simple as that.

Wow, ran the gamut there from New Age DemiGod to Karl Marx's roommate.
For those who missed my point waaay back at the start of this thread, I direct you to the lyrics, and I paraphrase:
"Nothing to live or die for, and no religion too." A little sad, dontcha think? I won't go through all the lyrics but his idea of what utopia looks like is very depressing. Reminds me of the Eloi in the original 1960 "The Time Machine" with Rod Taylor. Look it up, a sad prediction of what mankind would become if the challenge, the adventure, the work of surviving were taken out of day to day living.

Although if all the women looked like Weena (Yvette Mimiex) I suppose I could muddle through.

I was about 8 years old when the Beatles hit America and always loved their music. Back in the 60's Paul was my "favorite". But as I grew older (and I'm still listening to their music today), I started to really appreciate John as a writer, singer and musician. I even have an Epi Casino like he played. That said, I think our idols would tend to disappoint us if we met them in person. McClellan, on the other hand, would probably not disappoint, because though I appreciate his historical contributions, I do not necessarily hold him in high regard. Though I'd love to talk with him about Antietam.

"Child of the 60s" here. Lennon is complicated (I do not consider myself either a Beatles or Lennon fanatic) and (IMO) is difficult to philosophically pin down, especially with respect to his views on religion. This part of the Lennon story doesn't get a lot of play in the mass media – link

My take on him is that his disrespect was directed far more toward the temporal institution of "The Church" than the essence of religious belief.

Strictly my opinion, of course.
