When the German motorized infantry/panzergrenadiers switched from Krupp Protzes to larger trucks, how many were supposed to ride in each Opel Blitz or equivalent? Emphasis on "supposed to," as I'm sure they crammed more in when necessary. Or put another way, how many per zug (platoon)? And did the platoon hq ride in with some of the troops, or have its own truck (and if so, what kind)? |

The revised Platoon organisation was 43 men; Pl cmdr, Pl NCO, 2 messengers, stretcher-bearer 2 drivers, each with a 4-seater car Three Squads, each Ldr, Asst Ldr, 9 riflemen/LMG nos. 1 driver with 2-ton truck. So 12 men per truck and Pl HQ of 7 spread over two cars. The Pl could be considered 'tactically' mobile, in that each subunit had its own ride rather than being split across a number of vehicles. That came later with the moves towards the Type 45 Panzer Div, in which the PzGren Regt had a combat transport column rather than organic transport for all its elements. Gary |

Yep, one per Platoon, then a varying number of personnel would be trained as assistant SBs throughout a Company (10 in the one linked to above for example). Gary |

That's funny – "wheelbarrow race!" Might a one-man "stretcher manager" actually be a "verwundeter schlepper?" Dragger of a wounded man? GdeP PS: just made that up! |

Thanks! Just what I needed (except the wheelbarrow race). |
