"The Fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the invading Ottoman Turks was not the last of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Despotate of the Morea in southern Greece was a province of the Eastern Empire and managed to survive the fall of the city. The failure of the despots to pay their annual tribute to the Ottoman Sultan, and finally their own revolt against Ottoman rule, caused Mehmed to come the Morea in May 1460 thus ending this last Byzantine province.
