Recently I was doing some research on the Soviet army in the far east c.1985. I came across references to Tank Turret Battalions as part of Fortified Areas. Were these what they seem to be: units made up of tank turrets in fixed positions?

That is a common tactic since WWII.

There's a chapter in Clancy's "The Bear and the Dragon" – obsolete turrets placed along the Yalu/Yellow to oppose any Chinese landings.

Yes I remember that … That is one of the things that crossed my mind.

Also IIRC, Austria years after WWII obviously, had dug in old US M47s. Along their Eastern Border, IIRC? With nothing showing but the turret, i.e. Hull Down. And IIRC Arnold Schwarzenegger was the driver of one of those back when he was in their Army. Why you'd put anybody that big in a Tank is a bit of a mystery ? But he'd be great replacing track and loading ammo though !

The "Governator" bought his tank (Austrian Army surplus). Had it shipped to California. Had it restored. He drove it on "Jay Leno's Garage" Looked good!

WOW ! I didn't know that !!! huh? "Tanks" for the intel !!! thumbs up

Of course Arnold has so much $$$$ money he could easily afford to do all that !! Wonder if the Austrian Army still have those dug in there along their border ?

Thanks everyone for their help. What type of tank was it?

As to Arnie being a tanker, governments do weird things. In our church we had a WW2 veteran; A mid-western farm boy who was over 6' and big. He was made a submariner. Must have been interesting. He was on the sub that rescued George Bush off of Iwo Jima. He took some photos. Of course he didn't know who Bush would eventually become. He just like taking pictures. Interestingly, another church member was a WW2 German submariner. Was drafted in late 1944 (at a very young age) and sent to submarine school. Never got to sea. If fact was never assigned to a sub. Made a grunt and quickly captured.

"Aaanold" has the M-47 which he drove while in the Austrian Army. I saw the show in syndication so can't even tell you which season, sorry. Didn't say how much it cost, but did say that shipping was only $20,000. USD

so much $$$$ money
Yeah. He's spent more on just one tank than I have spent on all of mine. laugh
