I was given the Cruel Seas starter set for Christmas.

Looks interesting but I can't see it is something that I am going to get really involved with buying extras extra, just paint up the starter models and have fun with that.

So when it comes to painting, I don't want to go out and buy a load of extra paints, so will use what I have already, doesn't matter if it is not perfectly correct just close enough.

I've figured out the S-Boats, but not 100% sure about the Vosper MTBs. Just standard finish what colours would be used. I'm looking at tge White Ensign paints for reference – so AP or WEM numbers would be great.

Two or three colours I'm thinking. Hull and super structure. Deck. And the darker grey on hull.

Guessing the hull and super structure is ‘Light Grey AP 507C".

I'd guess the hull is Dark Grey AP 507A or Medium Grey AP 507B.

Guessing the second colour on tge two tone hull is Medium Grey AP 507B.

But these are all guesses on my part so I'd appreciate your advice.

There is a Cruel Seas facebook group where you can get lots of ideas. Very active and very friendly.

Instructions for Airfix's 1/72 Vosper have the superstructure and deck details in light grey (#64) with deck and hull in sea grey (#27); their illustration shows the sea grey smoothly tapering (beginning from about the forward gun mount) toward the waterline, presenting the appearance of a false bow wave (but darker). The remaining extreme forward section of the hull is in light grey.

Alnavco has some info on WWII naval colors as well.

Depends upon the period, and vessel types.

Light, medium, and dark gray were all used at one time, especially early on in the war.

Some were also painted white/very light gray, with gray or blue panels on the sides, or with pastel colors.

Decks could also be a navy blue, as opposed to the normal gray color.

Are the WEM paints available for sale again?

Last I'd read, they were out of production, and WEM had closed up shop, sadly.

The Lifecolor set Royal Navy WWII Eastern Approach – Early War Set 1 contains the following paints
UA 631 Admiralty Dark Grey (507 A)
UA 632 Admiralty Medium Grey (507 B)
UA 633 Admiralty Light Grey (507 C)
UA 634 Light Grey B20

They can be bought seperately as well.

@Virtualscratchbuilder -- the Cruel Seas facebook group is a closed group….and I'm not on facebook. Think you can suggest the moderator makes it a public group?
