"Bold proposal: Take the "stars" out of Star Trek. Make it a hard(ish) sci-fi alternate history setting taking place within our solar system. Yes, this would lose some of the mission statement of the voice over intro, but it would actually put it in line with Roddenberry's pitch noting similarities to Wagon Train and Horatio Hornblower (spoiler: neither series featured journeys to other worlds.). In modern high concept terms we could think of it as The Expanse meets Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea…."

Jovian Chronicles essentially does this.

1. Can't do anything with Star Trek, because it wants to preach instead of tell stories.
2. Why reboot to 1950's SF and skip the best part? I know this Solar System. It doesn't have Kirk and Spock: it has Northwest Smith, John Erik Stark, Hawk Carse and Captain Future. But he did it in such a way as to not give me the deteriorating Martian canal network and ancient lost cities.
3. Steal Stirling's "Lords of Creation" reboot, and you can have the whole thing.

…the mysterious Romulans of the cold depths of beyond Uranus.

He said Uranus…

(Cue the Beavis and Butthead snicker track)

Isn't the Expanse basically this?

skippy000114 Jan 2019 12:16 a.m. PST

The actual pronunciation of Uranus would be 'Our-rann-oos'

Orbital, a Traveller setting would work for this. I would use GearKrieg/Jovian Chronicles for a mixed Pulp/Weird War Ii setting.

Isn't the Expanse basically this?

Seems to me – yes.

I guess if you set it 2000 yrs+ in the future, assume Earth had colonized the solar system, then pulled back and the colonies developed on their own for a couple of millennia, you could wind up with something like 'Star Trek Lite'.

Read the books. It doesn't stay that way for long.
