I played W40K a long time ago (2nd edition). I am not sure I want to jump back into the game after all these years. I thought it would be fun, for old time sake, to build some Space marines and couldn't resist a $30 USD box of ten. The pieces look great, and I am excited to do some customization, but then I noticed the bases are 32mm and not 25mm. How significant is this change in base size in the new version of the game? Do people still play with 25mm based figures? |

Yes, they still use 25mm. The switch to 32mm started before the 8th edition came out. People think they look better, but it is not necessary rules-wise. |

The change from 28mm to 32mm bases only applies to space marines iirc. |

Space Marines, some genestealers from box games, and Orks are rumored to be next. |

There's nothing rules wise that specifies what size bases you use, nor does it really matter for game play. It is all based on aesthetics. The larger 32mm bases were needed for the Primaris Space Marines and new Death Guard models due to the larger size of those models. Even the old space marines barely fit on the 25mm bases as it was. |

I've found that all but the oldest Marines look better on 32mm bases, and that even the oldest recognizable Terminators look better on 40mm bases. The fantasy side "orruks" are already shipping on 32mm in many cases, so that change to the 40k Orks is not a stretch. |

This is probably going to give me fits. You see I started using older W40K figures for my SciFi role playing games and I was using 25mm bases on a 32mm square grid (Lego 4 x 4 plates) The new 32mm bases are going to be a bit crowded on my Lego space ship deck plans. 'Cause the models (at least just the legs, which I have done so far) look really good on the bigger base. |

I find that having leaders, characters, and special & heavy weapons on the larger (32mm) bases, with the "cannon fodder" on the regular (25mm) bases that I have been using for decades works pretty well. I also use them for models that "need" more room. |
