I know the Germans carried their regimental colors into battle during the first few months of the war but is anyone aware of whether they would have also carried the Reich war flag (Reichskriegsflagge) into combat? Thanks in advance for any information! |

The Kriegsflagge was not generally carried. The only places I know of anyone carrying it were in Africa and in China. Both location being Imperial troops. German Army units were by States and not the Imperial government. So to answer your question, if you are doing Europe 1914, no. It wouldn't even have been flown from admin buildings, this would have been some form of the tricolor national flag. The Kriegsflagge would be associated with the Navy more than the Army. |

I agree with AICUSV. There were several examples of regimental colours being carried or being present, if bundled away, in the earliest battles. There is at least one regimental account relating to the Race to the Sea, which was as late as October 1914. No examples of the Reich war flag though. Robert |

Flags were not carried in WWI. Except maybe in Africa. |

Rallynow, do you mean flags of any kind or just the Reichskriegsflagge? Regimental flags were definitely carried into battle in the earliest weeks of WW1. Not in all cases but for sure in some. Robert |

I think the French did in the early Battles of the Frontiers but they got away from it pretty quickly. I don't remember reading evidence that the Germans did in 1914. But I could wrong. |

Some German regimentals were captured at the Battle of the Marne in 1914. |

Yes, there were examples of German regimental flags being carried into battle in 1914. As late as October, there were examples of such flags having to be buried on the battlefield whenever their capture was threatened. Robert |

BTW = the use of the term "regimentals" for German colors is not technically correct, you know what I mean. |
