You were asked – TMP link When should you thank the umpire/GM? 62% said "always" 19% said "if he did a good job with the event" 18% said "before and after the game" |

I must disagree with the 19%. An inadequate performance does not suspend the requirements of common courtesy. I've clapped at the end of some ghastly musical performances one time or another. |

Always try to thank GMs as well as comment on games with great visual appeal or unique characteristics… however, if the GM is not too good all that I offer is a simple "thanks". |

And help clean up, too. I have shocked a few GMs who never had anybody stay to clean up. Come on, Gamers!! John |

I find that when i put on games at US shows the participants are mostly very kind and considerate. I thank them for that. On the other hand, there have been couple of drunk players who were a real nuisance in terms of language (smiley face). Thus no PP games start after 9pm now. |

mumbasa, agreed on helping clean up. Always did that from the start of my wargaming days. One of my gripes, and I have seen it happen even with older, experienced gamers are ones who never even offer to help. Not often, but it shouldn't happen at all, unless like some GMs I know, who want to put away items themselves to preserve a very precise organization. |

who want to put away items themselves to preserve a very precise organization. Still, pick the troops out of the terrain. Set them on a clear spot on the table. Sort infantry from artillery from cavalry and tanks. Set buildings separate from vegetation. Then let the GM box them as he/she wishes. |

I usually give players a job if they ask. Putting all the trees in one box or all the trenches in another can be a tremendous help time-wise, and it doesn't interfere with my "organizing". And, yes, having players sort out figures into categories is very helpful. There has rarely been a game in which someone did not offer to help. Once in a great while I will thank them and send them on their way, usually because I want some time on my own to reflect on the game while doing some fairly automatic work with my hands. |

I thank the umpire/refree/GM and the opposing players. |

My guests are usually quite up to sorting units, but it's better that I ensure they return to the proper boxes. This also gives me a chance to look everything over, fix any damage and ask myself whether I really want them to be painted like that for the next game. (Last game involved some troops who hadn't been out in a bit. "Putting everything away" involved an evening of repairs to the Geo-hex, an hour or so of work on the Life Guards and an afternoon on the 7th Hussars. I don't want to think about the next time the 30mm Prussians come out of their boxes.) |
