Very nice. Looked like a good time.

Thanks Doug. Yes, we enjoyed the game thoroughly even though we decided to halt it before it ran to its scenario conclusion. However, at that point it was obvious that the Austrians stood no chance and in the circumstances would have left the field anyway.

Yes for the Austrians to pull this one off they must coordinate and Hollezonern to be less aggressive at first to only pin the French until support is in place!

Regards too the Infantry move to contact vs Artillery Bombardment.
As I understood it, an aggressive force attacking would have a 15 min to 20 min march to contact. So as to limit the Artillery bombardment as much as possible. ( IE French center Attack at Austerlitz). This is simulated in the ESR with the Skirmish/Artillery Phase action taken first… with any resulting assessments taken with the "under 450m range" modifiers, before the Combat phase, simulating some bombardment ( though limited by the aggressiveness of the attack) and typical effective + canister range defense fire, as one would expect to happen.
The next phase under combat would be the point blank range canister and defense- now simulated through the CR of the artillery.
So it is still there, as needed.

I.E. Maneuver to contact, skirmish/bombardment fire, then(if passing any assessment from the S&B phase to remain in contact) combat.

Thanks for the interesting comment marshalGreg. Indeed, I agree that the mechanics work the way you describe them and the logic is fine. However while playing we still felt it was a bit too easy for an attacking formation to move to contact in one move for the price of a few fatigue points. Then again, the dice play their part but that is beside the point. We felt that an attacker should be subject at least to another round of artillery fire before contact. Would an entire division have taken twenty minutes to traverse 900-plus yards? Given the number of battalions involved I have my doubts.
