Can anyone offer any information on the divisional structure of Garibaldi's army. I have not been unable to find anything on the internet. I know the brigades but cannot group them. |

J.W. Brown's "Unit Organizations and Orders of Battle of the Great Armies of Europe 1853- 1870" contains some information about the Garibaldian army, but these consist mainly of lists of regiments. To quote: "The unit organization of Garibaldi's Army is difficult to ascertain… Usually, two battalions formed a regiment and two regiments formed a brigade… There were plenty of independent battalions attached to brigades or even regiments… infantry divisions eventually used these numbers-- 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th… The divisional numbers indicate a link with the Sardinian army, whose divisional numbers ended with 14." Not much help, I suspect, but the whole organization seems very "organic". |

The most detailed OOBs can be found in the old Freikorp campaign booklet by Luigi Casali and the book 'Garibaldi; the Revolutionary and his men', by Andrea Viotti. |

Thanks for the responses guys. I have the Casali and also the recent Ospreys. I have search the internet in vain looking for Orders Of Battle so I can slot my numerous battalions/regiments and brigades into divisions but so far have only been able assign four brigades to divisions. It looks like no records exist…so I will have to decide for myself. |

IR1Lothringen -- do you have the "Red Shirts" booklet from Freikorps 15 (Campaign Booklet No.8A), by Luigi Casali? Pages 52-54 give a breakdown of Garibaldi's Army at the Battle of the Volturno. It lists the divisions by number, 15-18, and lists the brigades in each division, and each regiment/battalion in each brigade. |
