Several of the listed were just criminals IMHO.

Well, yes several of them were just criminals. Read McCorkles auto biography for a useful corrective. If you don't want to, just understand that many who rode with Quantril would be killed if they stopped fighting and just tried to return home. Bosnia had nothing on western Mo in the Civil War. They were still killing in the 1890s over the Civil War in Missouri. The last murder that was directly related to 'the war' occured in 1917 in the Branson, Mo area.

Zulupaul, and the thugs who sided with the Union were saints? They weren't. They just happened to be on the winning side.

My GG Grandfather returned from fighting for the Union to discover his farm had been burned down by Rebel bushwhackers. I have to admit to a slight bias against those guys.

The Federal govt burned my family out for no other reason than living in a particular county. See general order number 11.

In addition, the only difference between Bosnia and Missouri was that rape and murder of women and children was not permitted by either side. Now they may throw you out of your home with no food and take all your possessions, but physical harm to women and children was not allowed.

The movie 'Ride with the Devil' does a good job of showing the era.

Yes, that was a good movie …

But yes, generally, most of the CSA Guerillas could be labeled as criminals. But as we know civil wars can be particularly "bloody" at times … E.g. MO Red Legs vs. Bloody Bill Anderson. And the list goes on.
