So this thread TMP link had me wondering options are available for (fairly historical) street gang "warfare." I know of B'hoys by VACG link I also known of Gangland from Wessex Games link and I also found Street Wars NYC link and Gang War LA link It also occurs to me that Tribal link and its supplement Primeval link could probably be easily modified to suit street gang fights. There are also several rules that depict gangsters (of the 1920s and beyond), but those somehow seem different (just as, fists, brickbats, and knives are different than tommy guns and .38 specials). Likewise there are any number of sci-fi gang rules. I would consider those beyond the scope of this query.
So has anyone played any of these, and if so, which would you recommend and why? BTW if any (or all) of the authors of these rules wants to send me a free copy I'll be glad to write a lovely comparative review. Otherwise my budget will probably limit me to one or two rule sets. |

The Street Fight rules from Foundry as a free download. Based on their Rules with No Name Wild West set they can be fun. link |

Honestly, Gangs of Mega City One is one of the best. While it is set in a non-historical milieu, anything scifi is really in unit stats rather than rules. So if you just don't give units a superwhamadine frazratz ray (or whatever), the rules for turf, income, recruiting, loyalty, leadership, and response by the authorities are a really good base to design a gang warfare scenario around. |

You could easily use 5150 Back Alley, Bright Lights or 5150 Urban Renewal for running a gang. The books both have a campaign and encounter system to build your core leader, recruit your gang and run them through missions and encounters. link |

thanks to, SBminisguy, Andoreth, etotheipi for the suggestions but those rules all seem pretty… deadly. However, I was looking for something where people are knocked out, maybe have a limb or rib broken, or a few teeth knocked out. The sort of system where death is rare. |

With GMCO, it depends on how you kit out your units. If you give them automatic weapons, blood will flow. If you have them batons and brass knuckles, it will be another kind of blood. The Judges (or whatever LEO organization you want them to be) are primed to arrest first. Of course, if the criminals are slaughtering each other or civilians, the law will respond in kind. |

However, I was looking for something where people are knocked out, maybe have a limb or rib broken, or a few teeth knocked out. The sort of system where death is rare. In 5150 there's a set of rules for "After the Fight" which tell you if figure a figure knocked out in a fight is recovered or lost, if your figures gain or lose experience, etc. The campaign system has a time limit (you can set that, or make it the default 10 years) is also geared towards gaining points to tell you how well your Star figure does before retirement -- and yes, you can get arrested and do time in the slammer if you're playing a ganger. |

At the risk of appearing merely self-serving, "B'hoys!" produces around 80% or more non-lethal casualties. It was NOT about killing the opposition, but chasing them away and controlling the street--for the moment, anyway. |

B'hoys does look like a good game, but having said that Gangland from Wessex games looks good, and is only $6.63 USD as a pdf. I have to say, I would be a lot more inclined to buy games from the Virtual Armchair General if they were available more cheaply in pdf. |
