Other than LBH and the Rosebud, Fetterman's Massacre etc, which historical actions (other than small scale skirmishes) lend themselves to being replayed on the tabletop? I've found some in the Yellow Ribbon/CWTB rules but there must be some others? And if you can point me towards some written-up scenarios, so much the better! |

WESTERN by Peter Pig is specifically written for such battles. It does include 40+ battles but only gives brief detail . It does give jump off points for internet research though. link |

Some great suggestions there, many thanks – time to start reading! Stephen: reading up on the Nez Perce campaign at the moment: some very different actions from the usual accounts. But how different in appearance would the NP have been or can I use ‘usual' Plains Indians? DoB2: it was accounts of your campaign that really got me interested in the period several years ago, for which many thanks! |

Perhaps the two most distinguishing things about the Nez Perce would be the pompadours commonly worn and the number of appaloosa horses. The Nez Perce are actually usually classified as Plateau rather than Plains Indians. Lots of similarity though. Their greater exposure to white influences and association led to more and earlier use of trade cloth garments. Not sure it is true, but I have read they were the only western Indians to understand the use of the rear elevating leaf sight on rifles and carbines. It made their long range fire more effective supposedly. |

Garryowen, thanks, you've confirmed my thoughts , but I don't think I've seen many suitable figures in 28mm, with pompadours and more European clothing. I'll probably end up using my existing Indian figures, I think |

Garryowen is right on about the Nez Perce, including their proper use of rear sights on rifles, at least I've read that same info. |

The Steptoe's Fight 1858 was the basis for the 1950's movie Pillars of the Sky staring Jeff Chandler. In that movie the colonel's name was changed to Stedloe. |
