"A common excuse for German inflation of claims is that the battlefield is left to their enemy, so there is no possible way to count how many enemy tanks were lost. However, even on the defensive, the Germans seem to manage to greatly overestimate the damage dealt to the enemy. According to the the 1972 edition of the Deutsches Soldatenjahrbuch, the 561st Tank Destroyer Battalion destroyed 34 Soviet tanks, "nearly all heavy and super-heavy" during their defense of Klepenino between January 29th and February 8th of 1942. Let's take a look at what was happening in the area and what these "super-heavy tanks" really were…." Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Thank you Tango. Interesting that the analyst here, busy beating up on the Germans for exaggerating the quantity and quality of Soviet tanks destroyed, doesn't say word one when the Soviets describe what could at most be STUG III's as German heavy tanks. What they told us in the Air Force Historian course a long time ago was that eye-witness accounts of numbers of enemy destroyed were not reliable, and had to be checked against other sources. They didn't say some particular country's accounts weren't reliable--just that men fighting for their lives weren't keeping good careful scores of enemies destroyed. That seems to be about right. |
