Supposedly some Union Irish troops fought bare foot by tradition but I'm sure there were times the Union was short of shoes. Isn't that how Gettysburg started? |

With the chase to catch General Hood's army after the Nashville Campaign a lot of Union troops advanced quicker than their supply trains and so many went barefoot; this was made worse with the terrible winter conditions they were in. |

It really is amazing at how quickly ACW-era shoes wear out. I'm a reenactor and I've had modern work boots which I've worn for years with no problem. But a CW brogan, only being worn infrequently, will last for perhaps 120-150 days. Modern materials and techniques really are far superior to old-fashioned craftsmanship in this particular case. |

I've read a couple accounts of troops marching barefoot, to save their shoes for fighting in. |
