The HC supplement for "Biblical & Classical" lists under the "North European Bronze Age," has two entries (pg. 19):

1) "Light infantry warband with mixed arms" @ 22 points per unit, w/ a provision for "Reduction to field light infantry warbands as small units" @ -7 per unit

2) "Medium infantry chieftain's warband fielded as a small unit."

The basic rule book listing for "standard" sized units of "4 deep Infantry" (noted elsewhere as the rank-order for warbands) as "32 to 40 models," and then has a provision under "Small" sized units for "20 to 24" figures ("Hail Caesar!" pg. 16).

So, since WarLord Games has never put their Forum back in action, my question here is this. Am I correct in interpreting these rule extracts such that in fielding "Warband Small Units" I need something like 20-odd figures arranged in four ranks (deep) of five figures each (across), and NOT like the even smaller units of "8 to 12" for "Standard" units of "2 deep Infantry" which would only be TWO ranks (deep) of only FOUR figures each (across)??

Thanks in advance for the help!! grin

There are no hard and fast rules about how many figures should be in a unit of a given size. As longs as small unit has more than a tiny unit, a normal sixed unit has more than a small unit and a lrge unit has more than a normal sized, the game will work.

I use 8 figures for all of my small units (Republican Romans) and skirmishers, which works well.

We use 12 figures for our small units (archers, skirmishers) and 24 for our standard size units

I use different figure counts depending upon the army. My Dacian warbands use a 40mm x 80mm base with 3 to 4 figs per base with four bases to the unit for a standard unit. Small is half that and tiny is one base.

My Carthaginian standard units are three 40x40 bases with 12 figs to the unit. Small are two bases, tiny is one base.

My War of Roses Army uses two 40x40 bases with 6-8 figs per unit as a standard unit. Small are one base with 3 to 4 figs and tiny is one base with one or two figs.

As MajorB mentioned, just as long as the frontages are consist between the opposing armies then you can do anything you want. I usually base my decisions on how to get away with painting the fewest figures and still pull off the look of the army.

That's one of the advantages of HC; is that it scales to your collection.
In my games of HC a standard unit has 12-14 figures ( a base of 125mm x 75mm or 5 figures 3 ranks deep) and a small unit had 6 figures (75mm x 50mm or 3 x2).
