During my search for more esoteric naval engagements, I wondered if there are any good books dealing with the actions under sail of the various South American navies in their wars of independence and against each other.

Any recommendations?

Ironclads in Action, Sir J (or W) Wilson, published early C20th. Goes for a couple of hundred quid on eBay. Cover the Chile-Peru war, plus another three which escape me at the moment.

Believe that George Nafziger (Nafziger collection) has translated a number of books that may be applicable. His website has them listed or drop him a line at the email address . He is quick to respond. H

The Aubrey maturin stories fictionalize some at the end of the cycle. Pretty close to history as a novel can.

Cochrane: The Life and Exploits of a Fighting Captain. By Robert Harvey.
His real life adventures are better than Hornblower and Aubrey put together.
After a glorious career in the Napoleonic wars, he was framed in a Stock Exchange scandal, escaped the prison (and the pillory) via a rope, fled the country to become a mercenary admiral in South America. "on one occasion chasing the entire Portuguese fleet in a single ship".
This is as good as it gets…

There's also ‘Four Modern Naval Campaigns' by Sir William Laird Clowes published in 1906. It covers:
The Campaign of Lisa, 1866
The War between Chile and Peru, 1879-81
The Chilean Revolutionary War, 1891
The Attempted Revolution in Brazil, 1893-94

Easier to get hold of (Amazon) is The Royal Navy and the Peruvian Chilean War of 1879-1881.

Other than that your best bet is the Internet for posted articles, and past issues of wargaming magazines – I have many of the latter in an electronic index and could search them for relevant articles if you like, I know there are some but probably few.

'Ironclads in Action" and "Four Modern Naval Campaigns" are available from the Internet Archive in digital form for free.
