Not another Beetle!

Why are people so obsessed with them in WW2? It's a POST-WAR car!

Yes, the car was designed before the war. But production didn't start until after the war. To all practical intents and purposes they didn't exist during the war!

On the other hand, it would be useful for any modern or zombie game, as it was in production for decades.

I know they had a handful during the war, but never more than a handful. It's akin to the various "we made enough to count on the fingers of a very clumsy carpenter" tank prototypes that were sent into combat.

I agree, it's a nice model for post-war games.

Ironically, the first few thousand off the production line went to the British Army…

Nice model.

I can't say I've noticed an obsession with them, but I do think it's fun to field one in (very) late war games. On the gaming table there's something neat about seeing that iconic and familiar shape among the buildings and tanks of a WWII game. And as a wargamer, why not? Fielding the unusual and unique can be part of the fun.
There certainly was a small number in Berlin at least. I recall one photo of a shot-up example.

I have the 20mm MW plastic kit (which is terrible btw), and also the version with the tiny truck bed (which certainly is post-war, but looks so cool full of Volksturm that I let it slide).

If you are going to allow someone to game with a Tiger II (492 built), then shouldn't you allow someone to game with a Beetle Kommandeurswagen – VW Typ 87 (564 built)? Personally, I think jeeps, command cars, and civilian cars aren't much more than terrain in a wargame anyway.

Glad you like it boys!. (smile)

I do like the Type 87 as a Kubelwagen replacement for the Afrika Korps.
