TACTICA II

After 30 years of global play, Tactica receives an updated, upgraded version – Tactica II – that keeps the same streamlined system using multi-based units, clarifies the existing rules, and incorporates improvements to all aspects of this game.

Tactical formations represent ancient armies with movement and command control intertwined within the course of a battle. Unit Fighting Value still forms the core of the d6 combat system and all significant troop types, weapons, and special tactical conditions are included to differentiate armies.

Tactica II comes wirebound in 8.5x11 format and packed with well-playtested rules, plentiful diagrams, and army lists. Scales are approximately as follows: one figure equals 40-60 soldiers depending upon troop type, density, tactical operating area, and unit size; one inch is approximately 10-15 yards; and one turn equals about 20 minutes. 1 vol, 106 pgs 2018 US, ON MILITARY MATTERS

I hope that everyone has their personal affairs in order, because this really does mean that the Apocalypse is near.

Wow- I recall people were waiting for this to arrive in 2004, when I first joined TMP. :-)

There is a mod for Medieval II Total War that I have been waiting for since 2008. It is still in active development. Hoping to see the beta this December. Maybe.

Arty Conliffe never did anything fast.

Does anyone know the changes in II compared to the original? I've always liked the "fighting value" concept and wondered why no other rules authors have used it.

bandrsntch08 Dec 2018 12:04 a.m. PST

Fighting Values are still there. Combat is essentially the same as the original. Gone are the fixed Army lists, replaced by Lists with a points system. No more Battleline deployment, replaced by division command radius. Lot of other tweaks like Committed zones, Obligatory Charges, Impetus, but the basic mechanics of the original Tactica are still there. A system for representing both Republican and Marian Roman Armies is included. I would say T-2 is easier to play, yet still captures the tension and fun of the original.

BTW, I love the cover. It's like a wargamers version of "The White Album".

I am looking forward to seeing the rules in action. I played a lot of Tactica and really liked the system.

coopman09 Dec 2018 6:58 p.m. PST

What is the time period covered for the armies? Does it cover the dark ages & crusades periods or not?

bandrsntch09 Dec 2018 8:28 p.m. PST

As far as I know it will include the following:
Trojan War, New Kingdom Egyptian, Hittite,
Greek (City States),Spartans, Persian (Early),
Macedonian,Persian (Later),Indian ,
Successor (Ptolemaic),Successor (Seleucid),
Roman (2nd Punic War),Carthaginian,
Roman (Marian),Gallic & German,
Pontic (Early), Byzantine (Thematic), Arab Conquest,
Sassanid (Later), Norman, English , Viking.
Others will probably be added later as was done with the original Tactica Supplement. The good thing is that with the points system, it is a lot easier to make your own lists.

Thanks for the info.

In the description it says that Tactica II uses "multi-base nuts". Does anyone know what this actually means?

dante196910 Dec 2018 12:15 p.m. PST

"multi-base units"

Knob10 Dec 2018 1:11 p.m. PST

Still counting total figures for range combat and front rank for melee?

bandrsntch10 Dec 2018 5:02 p.m. PST

"multi-base units": Kind of a misnomer as it depends on how one mounts their figures, but assuming you've based yours four figures to a stand at would take twelve such stands to make a 48 figure unit. There is no reason however, you couldn't base the entire unit on a 12W X 4D stand although you would loose the ability to use the figures in a smaller unit with less ranks. Missile and Melee combat work essentially identical to the original Tactica.

dante196910 Dec 2018 8:43 p.m. PST

So it is still based on individual figures. How would basing for inputs and Hail Caesar work for Tactica 2?

bandrsntch10 Dec 2018 9:22 p.m. PST

Basing essentially same as original Tactica, but with figure creep, adjustments can be made as long as all use the same. Recommended width for 25mm HI is 15mm. The following should all fit on the same width base: 4HI, 3LI, 2SK Inf, 3HC, 2LC, 1SK Cav, 1CH, 1EL. Maximum frontage is 12 figures or 3 models(CH or EL).

Are there any army lists for Romans @ 350 AD? Also Goths from that time?

Games Plus in Mt. Prospect has a copy, they used to have two :)
