I was looking at my shelves of painted armies and just jotted down the list of all my collections. This is just the period/scale for each. In general I have enough troops to run large multi-player games using just my own kit. It got me wondering: do I have more collections, fewer, or about the same as other gamers? By my count I have 21 separate collections, some larger than others. Anyway here is my list:

*Army could not be fielded in a game this weekend.

Mostly each individual army will accommodate only one or two players per side--though this requires a serious table at 30 and 54mm. I always have at least two sides.

And this mess is actually much better than it was three years ago. Footlockers full continue to depart with every flea market.

Not as many collections as those listed here, but more than I can play with.

All of the painted ones have been played over the years, some puled out years later for more use. While many have not been played in the last 10 years, all have a chance of being played again.

I think that's about it. All the above fully painted, but with so many periods to choose from, they often go a long while without a game!

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP07 Dec 2018 9:44 a.m. PST

For what it's worth, I'm working the collections/games ratio problem from both ends--trying to ensnare additional opponents or get used to solo play, while selling off troops. The idea is to eventually get rid of all the 15mm and most of the 10mm, leaving me with (a) portable, storeable armies and (b) visible armies. Going to take a while, though.

Perris070707 Dec 2018 9:53 a.m. PST

If I am counting only painted armies, then:

15mm
Arab Conquest
Thematic Byzantine
Norman
Frankish Crusaders
Seljuk Turk
Fatimid Egyptian
Ayybbid Egyptian
Comnenan Byzantine
Nikephorian Byzantine
Mongol
Jin Chinese
Steppe Peoples

Napoleonic French
ACW – both sides
FPW French, Prussian, and Bavarian

28mm
Byzantine Armies (Multiple periods)
Seljuk Turk
Fatimid Egyptian
Frankish Crusaders
Bulgar

Unpainted = too numerous to list here

TMPWargamerabbit07 Dec 2018 12:49 p.m. PST

Some day the second hand market for used painted miniatures will drop through the floor and head for the center of the earth. The earth's spin balance maybe getting wobbly if one side has lead and the other plastic.

15th/6th Century Wallachians and Ottomans

prolly … others … too …

Now for extra points, how many on your lists have you played in the last year? 5 years? 10 years? Ever?

Year? 75% plus
Five Years +? All

'Course this gets at what is a collection and what does it mean to play a collection. F'r'ex, Yakuza, Blaxploitation, Kung Fu, Police, Modern Civilians, and Modern Generic Armies might all get on the table for a game (well, they did last week). But not 200+ of each. So the collection gets on the board, if not all the figures.

Timmo wrote "I'm staggered at how much some of you have. How did you ever get it all painted?"

Time, Timmo. Time. Next September, my first casting will be 50 years old. (He's part of a 30mm French Napoleonic horse artillery battery, and he was on the table in November.) Paint an hour a day for fifty years and see what you've done by the end of it.

It helps not to have a life, of course.

"I'm staggered at how much some of you have. How did you ever get it all painted?"

Painted? Of course not-- that's the REAL challenge.

TMPWargamerabbit07 Dec 2018 9:02 p.m. PST

Painted….. yes. Almost all the mentioned collections above. Only the largest powers still have unpainted miniatures but all are presentable for tabletop action. Started back in 1975….. still painting and modeling after 43 years.

How did you ever get it all painted?

Something about an old lady and an ocean …

I rarely watch TV as a sole activity. My wife knits and crosstitches, so we both spend time "together" doing different things. Talking, crafting, drinking. I paint at the dining room table, where the kids would also do homework. I take minis with me when I travel for work … not a lot of painting, but you can get a lot of stuff converted, based, prepped, and even primed, so the gruntwork is out of the way.

nickinsomerset08 Dec 2018 5:54 a.m. PST

Same as etotheipi, with the long haired General doing the same sort of stuff with wool and things! I have me panzer painting trolly that sits before me on the sofa and I have stuff painted whilst deployed/ working all over the world!
