HOTT Gaming "The Purge"

This is just a work in progress, but I am actually a fan of the movie series "The Purge". Oh yeah, it's a sad state of modern society, and Heaven forbid it ever came to reality, so do not think I would support such a action, as I do not and never would. However, from a HOTT gaming standpoint it might make a fun game. I mean you have both good and bad sides so that's the basic requirement covered.

I do see some slight modification to the basic game, which I am usually not a fan of, but to create the proper scenario set by the base line story I feel it is necessary. But even still the armies could be played as straight HOTT armies too. The needed modifications are somewhat similar to Chris Brantley's zombie game.

1. Instead of a 12 point game lost, the winner is the good if they get all survivors to a safe house/location and the bad it they prevent it.
2. Hordes are not allowed to be brought back into the game once destroyed.
3. Terrain is best designed with the main area being a large park with maybe some wooded areas or pond areas for bad going, and a gentle hill or two. Buildings may be placed around so a safe house can be established – but the safe house must always be on the opposite side from the good.
4. Elements need not be required to include the suggested number of figures. For example, a Horde for the good may be say two to five figures, and a Warband for the bad may be one to three or maybe even four figures.
5. Possibly only do 12 point armies????
6. All figures play as defined for combat, movement, cost and tactical factors

Again, these are just first blush thoughts. If any of you have seen any of the movies then you already know the fun possibilities of painting the "purgers" as they usually dress up like Halloween in masks and stuff. I've already sorted figures for some clown purgers, some cheerleader purgers, and gangland purgers. Then for the good I have some pure innocents for the Hordes and a Hero as each movie seems to identify at least one. But I am still toying with army lists. However, For me, it gives a good use to a lot of the extra figures I have available.

Any thoughts or suggestions are always welcome.

Terry

PS – Posting it here because I wasn't sure where it fit best.

Curious why you're opting for HOTT rather than a smaller scale 1:1 skirmish game? I've not seen the Purge movies … do they feature large gangs or clumps of enemies?

I have to agree with PatrickWR. I have seen at least two of the Purge Movies, I think a skirmish level set of rules would be more in keeping with the movies.

Concur with the 1:1 skirmish idea, but might want to make the appearance of the purgers random (to heighten tension, 'cause you don't know when/where they'll appear, and if they're in LOS, you'll want to try to hide or sneak around them.)

Seems like you are forgetting the POINT of Hordes – they come back (which makes up for them being crap troops). Not allowing them to have the strength that balances out their weakness is just wrong. Are you going to nerf all the element types?

Take a look at Two Hour Wargames rules. The Reaction system is a great way to model the interaction, and often chaos, you see in the Purge. You can even run Survivors as PCs and throw down NPC gangers as Purgers. PEFs guarantee uncertainty. ATZ and After the Horsemen have rules for exploring buildings where you roll to find items, other Survivors, or new potential threats.

If your only tool is a hammer, all your problems are nails :-)

In any event, HOTT can be used quite nicely for a Skirmish game.

Meh, the whole squares recoil/destroyed mechanic fits blocks and masses very well but doesn't look very good for singles IMO. Skirmish generally plays better with a bit more granularity. Range also doesn't fit really well (especially for modern weaponry). SOBH uses a similar mechanic for beating/doubling but also has knockdown, special abilities, etc. that works well for skirmish gaming. Trying to stretch tools can work- the hammer example is apt- but why when their are so many good games out there right now?
