Truly beautiful, both sculpting and painting! I have never seen the detailed symbols on the shabraques and sabretaches so accurately rendered. Given that the painting is so incredibly precise, I can only think that the blue for the bottom half of the officer's sword is enfirely deliberate – could you share what it represents, please? |

thanks for the comments, the lower half blue of the blade was very fashionable for officers, I don't know when it started but will find at the end of 18th century quite general, carried well into the 19th century blued officers blade with golden ornaments or slogans. There I did see some original Prussian officers 7YW blades with blued blade, I thought, why not paint it as well. |

Excellent paintwork Von W! I agree, superb work on the shabraques and pistol covers. I owned a 1796 pattern officers British Light Cavalry Sabre some years ago. It was blued on the lower 40% of the blade. Also inlaid with gold in the etchings. I sometimes pint them on officer figures swords. |

On Bluing (if that is the verb) of swords…..it can work…but in my hands rarely, at least not in 28mm. Certainly the more expensive swords showed this, usually with engraved script or ornament. I have rarely succeeded in showing it but my Mameluke officer almost caught it. Actually very, very, common in expensive auction rooms. Just Google "Blued sword" and go to images

It is not that difficult paint it blue – when you see originals it is blue. I don't know when this began to be a trend, in 7YW – I did see such blades but also blades without any blueing, so both options seemingly are a choice, later in the 18th century it became quite pandemic |

thanks for the feed back, I have to say the free hand painting, stripes everywhere taxed my nerves to the maximum |

I can imagine. The shabraque stripes do show me where I need to work more. But then I look at the two thin red stripes on the cross belts of the troopers. Now that is beyond most of us. I think many of us can compensate by working in a more Impressionist style. We could suggest such, at a distance. We rely on the human eye to "see" what it expects to see. But the camera is so cruel. Much of your work is so inspiring. Sometimes, though, one feels no way could I do that…….but please keep showing us so we can learn! |

I could not agree more. Shabraque striping is fraying to my nerves as well. I've never tried French striped paints, they scare me. |
