Washington then lost Philadelphia, and his men had barely survived the wretched winter at Valley Forge. In 1780, the British captured the major southern port at Charleston, imprisoning the American garrison there, and utterly defeated a second patriot army. Before that year was out, his long-suffering troops were on the verge of mutiny and one of his senior generals had gone over to the enemy…."

Neat article!

But it doesn't stress the value of GW personally. His success in each area of a commander's job was critical. Plenty of mistakes, sure, but it could not have held together without someone remarkable in that job.

The perseverance part is spot on, except that it was in large part non military perseverance that caused the colonists to win. The British could control anyplace they put their army, but they didn't have anywhere near the army, nor the money, to control the whole area. Whenever the Brits pacified an area and left, it just reverted back to Colonial control. It made the whole thing into an exercise in cat herding. Once the French entered, it was all clearly pointless and absurdly expensive.
