Well, that's another exercise in futility come to an end, with Game 12 of the World Chess Championship ending in yet another draw. This triggers a "fast" play series with each player receiving much less overall time on the clock to make their moves. (Good, because those 6 hour games were ridiculous. So were the 2 and a half hour games.) Time to watch the paint dry faster! |

And further draws means they move on to play three games of DBA |

I think Magnus took a knee at the end of the fourth quarter, knowing that he's a better player in rapid games and special teams. He was driving, but didn't want to pull an Eli Manning. I think the 2016 match went to a rapid games sudden death too. |

We'll see. First real chance for an American to win since Bobby Fischer. |

If all else fails Mangus can use the old Norwegian trick of putting an axe on the skull of his opponent. |

To further my NFL analogy. Fourth quarter. Score is tied. Carlsen has the ball on Caruana's 30 yard line. First down. Caruana is out of time outs. Magnus has 3. 1:50 left in game. So Magnus the GOAT (Greatest if all time) …. takes a knee 4 times so he can go into overtime. I wonder what Tom Brady (Or Garry Kasparov would do…) I think I'm now Team Fabiano. |

You can know exactly what Garry Kasparov thought of it. Here's his tweet: In light of this shocking draw offer from Magnus in a superior position with more time, I reconsider my evaluation of him being the favorite in rapids. Tiebreaks require tremendous nerves and he seems to be losing his. Ouch. Still, I understand the situation. While Carlsen had the advantage, it wasn't a guaranteed win. He knew a fresh series of games in a speedier format would give him more chances to be decisive, and has won championships in this way. If he wasn't feeling that he was on his best mental edge, maybe the decision to take a break, regroup, and hit from a style that's allegedly his forte is an understandable one. (In the meantime, if you're an advertiser backing this thing, or FIDE for that matter, more games garnering more worldwide attention is hardly something you're gonna whine about!) |
