Greetings, I'm completly new to wargaming and i think i lack the basic terms to get started. Could somebody help me with that? My biggest problem is arround unit sizes, or how armies are composed in the napoleonic era. I'm Hungarian and i find it difficult to translate it. Thanks in advance! |

A very big topic! So I'll try to give a very basic answer… Napoleonic armies were made up of three basic types of soldiers. Infantry, who were foot soldiers. Cavalry, who fought on horses. Artillery, who had the big guns/cannons. Most soldiers were infantry. The basic unit was the battalion, usually of about 800 men. Between one to five battalions made up a regiment, and usually two regiments made a brigade. On average two brigades made a division and two or three divisions made an army-corps. The basic cavalry unit was a squadron of about 140 men. Between three and ten squadrons made up a regiment. Regiments were combined into brigades and corps in a similar way to the infantry. Artillery units were called batterys, usually having 6 or 8 guns. Batterys could be attached to infantry and cavalry brigades and divisions and corps, depending on how different countries organised things. |

Apart from not speaking Hungarian, I'm in a similar position to the OP, so thanks Cerdic for your answer – just what I was looking for! |
