As mentioned on another board, I was surprised when visiting the OG15s website for the first time in a very long time to see a list of new additions to the ancient ranges. I hadn't seen them promoted on the Hobby News page of TMP or anywhere else. The notification indicates that they've been available since May; presumably this year, but…? I've had a closer look at them, and the images show that they match the style of the existing figures very well. In fact, I think some of them might be old bodies with new heads, however, most seem to be entirely new sculpts. Either they managed to snatch some time from the hectic schedule of the original sculptor, Andy Cooper, or they found someone with the skill to emulate his style. In the case of the Late Roman legionaries and armoured archers, it's not made clear that they're in mail. The old, leather-armoured legionaries are still available though. Just to reiterate, OG15s has remade its Cretan archers to better accord with recent archaeological findings (of which I know nothing), and has finally filled a significant gap by adding thureophoroi to the range. |

The new Late Romans are definitely in mail. Very nice they are |

I agree, they have not done a good job promoting themselves and new figures. I visit their webpage from time to time and notice thins, but many won't. |

Before the new thureophoroi pack was released OG15s had a pack under that name in its Fields of Glory battle groups range, made up from figures from existing packs in the ordinary ancients range. These were unnamed, but no doubt vaguely similar types, such as… Greek peltasts with spears? At best they'd have been only roughly historically correct. Looking even closer at the image for the new pack, I noticed that one of the poses is wearing… a Jewish mantle! My suspicions having been roused I had a look at the 'Maccabeans with captured Roman(?) equipment' pack, and sure enough – it's the same sculpt. So is this really a new pack, or just the FoG pack downsized to the standard pack size – and what does it say about the other 'new' packs? |

The 'new' thureophoroi pack leaving a considerable bit to be desired, I've been combing through the OG15s online catalogue looking for suitable stand-ins for them (not helped by the fact that there are no images in the FoG battlegroups section to give one a clue as to what figures have been used). The main problem is that any such figures should really be cast open-handed like the hoplite figures for the attachment of a long wire spear (even the thorakitai figures have cast-on short spears or javelins). It looks to me as though a couple of the poses in the 'Maccabeans in captured armour' pack might do, if you can convince OG15s to make up separate packs of them, and the Thracian javelinmen have the right shield, but are wearing a Greek-style helmet; OK for Greek armies, and passable for Successors I suppose. The latter would need to be from the FoG range; in the standard range they come in a mixed pack with archers (unless you need archers, that is). In either case you'd need to remove the short spears and drill out the right hand to take a wire spear. I know that QRF and Essex make dedicated thureophoroi figures (the latter erroneously sculpted bare-footed), but neither brand appeals to me, and OG15s is just more convenient and affordable as a one-stop source. |

Yet another look at the new thureophoroi pack image suggests that the old bodies have been given new heads with a single, Hellenistic style of helmet where appropriate; but that doesn't change the fact that thureophoroi shouldn't be clad in Maccabean clothing. Hmmm… |
