I both dislike and distrust books and articles that attempt, by any method, to psychoanalyze any historical personage.

To do so is the extreme of hubris--utterly unqualified amateurs analyzing in absentia over the centuries using cherry-picked references.

I am suspicious of 11-page articles that claim to discuss geopolitical elements as well as alleged psychoanalysis. Sometimes these folks deliberately give real hisorians a bad name.

But… have you read it?… (smile)

Paul, I never pretended to be otherwise. But I really do dislike pop history larded with secondary sources and overlaid with psychobabble.

dibble25 Nov 2018 6:52 a.m. PST

I feel your pain! I have a loathing of historians who lift bits of quotes and/or hide context to further an agenda.

Paul :)

And don't they just! Speaking of which, I actually read a book (?) by an amateur historian/scribbler that was a case in point of sourcing one's agenda: The Real Napoleon--The Untold Story. It was such a hagiographic and nonsensical screed that it exacerbated my diabetes. Probably the very worst book I've read in decades.
