"Rather unusual types of vehicles frequently appeared in WWII. Most of them remained on paper, but some of them made it to production. German tank builders were no exception, creating vehicles whose mere concept boggles the mind. The VK 16.01, otherwise known as the PzII Ausf. J was one such vehicle. It was not as useless as its brother, the PzI Ausf. F, but the concept of a lightly armoured heavy tank raises many questions…." Main page link Amicalement Armand |

The Pz2 J is in World of Tanks, but is so rare you gotta jump through a lot of hoops and spend real world money for it. A tier 3 tank with tier 5 heavy tank armor.

Panzer 2 is perhaps the most handsome of WW2 tanks IMO. Would have been useful for Recce roles. |

Yup. A fine example of technology developing rapidly after the design specs were developed. According to Doyle and Jentz, the order for the development of what eventually became the J was placed in December of 1939, and the prototype was completed in June of 1940. However, there were delays in setting up the assembly lines, and production did not begin until April of 1942, by which point the Germans had already encountered the T-34, which made PzII's obsolete. In the end 22 were produced, and field-tested by 12 Pz Div. in 1943. Photographic evidence indicates that at least one was later converted to an armored recovery vehicle, with the turret removed and a crane installed instead. |
